A Passive-House Design in Spain Without a Drop of Paint

Architects Paloma Hernaiz and Jaime Oliver, cofounders and directors of OHLab, believe that a building is only as attractive as it is sustainable. “If you know it’s polluting the environment, it probably won’t appeal to you,” Oliver argued. Climate change has changed our perspective. Glass curtain walls, for example, have lost some of their allure. “Today, if you see a building that’s entirely glazed, it’s not as nice aesthetically because you should know it doesn’t work well,” he says. By that measure alone, Paseo Mallorca 15, an apartment building the firm designed in Palma, on the Spanish island of Mallorca, is a stunner: Covered in pine shutters, it relies on passive heating and cooling techniques and consumes little energy.

Hernaiz and Oliver, who are married, met in New York while earning their masters’ degrees at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and later worked together at OMA

For four decades “Bliss House” has stood, mostly hidden between the road and beach, on pristine waterfront property in Southampton Village as renowned architect Norman Jaffe’s first local design.

Homeowner Orest Bliss agreed in 1978, as a condition of the city granting development approval, to an agreement requiring landscaping to largely protect the angular residence from view.

At the time, several Southampton officials considered Jaffe’s modernist design “radical”, with one member of the village planning council arguing that the gabled roof could stab seagulls.

Fast forward to 2023 and the house’s architectural legacy is in the midst of a legal battle over whether it can be demolished as part of Bliss’ plan to sell the property at 88 Meadow Lane.

While once deemed too radical, Southampton officials have now tried to deem the controversial home too historic to demolish. The litigation has raised questions about what’s worth preserving in an

As anyone who has gone through the process of searching for room colors will try, choosing the right color for a room can be a minefield with endless choices and subtle nuances to understand and overcome.

But along with what is the most stressful color?, we are also often asked ‘what is the most draining color? According to color psychologists, the most draining and fatiguing color is ‘bright yellow’.

Rethinking Lighting in Your Kitchen Design

Factors to Consider When Lighting Your Kitchen

When choosing kitchen lighting, appearance and style are very important. Your lighting should complement the overall kitchen design. Your lighting should also work for tasks like cooking and cleaning. After all, who wants to chop vegetables in the dark?

Consider for a moment, the commercial equivalent of kitchen lighting – there are codes and regulations around lighting areas where food is stored and prepared. The idea is to have brightness, light quality, and coverage standards that increase safety. Better visibility = better decisions and functionality in terms of food safety and occupational safety. Yes, many Michelin-starred restaurants have moody lighting around the dining table, but you can bet with 100% certainty that the food preparation and storage areas in the kitchen are brightly lit and up to code.

Foodie-level chefs tend to have the same expectations for residential kitchen preparation and storage areas.

Texas is famous for its unparalleled barbecue, its gargantuan size, and—arguably our favorite reason—the collection of castle-like homes scattered across its hills, mountains, and plains. One such property, a seven-bedroom lakehouse in Chandler, belongs to lifestyle influencer Lauren Kay Sims, who is known for her fashion and style blogging, and her musings on building what she calls “a radiant life.”

As part of her pursuit of radiance, she enlisted Urbanology Designs’ principal designer and owner, Ginger Curtis, to help ensure their new vacation house would reflect her family’s style, without doing an entire remodel. She asked Curtis to outfit several of the key spaces in her new “kingdom”: namely the sprawling living room, primary bedroom, and a hybrid home office and lounge.

“Lauren and her husband purchased a grand, traditional style vacation home and wanted to put their stamp on it,” Curtis explains. Luckily for the Dallas-based designer, Sims knew

Much like the designer showcase, which was founded in 1965 and is considered one of the country’s oldest home and garden tours, the estate has a Pasadena legacy of its own. Two-plus acres from mining magnate Lucky Baldwin’s Rancho Santa Anita land holdings were carved out when WL Stewart, then president of Union Oil Company, bought the former citrus orchard as a wedding gift for his son, Arthur, and his wife, Ruth Nicholson Stewart .
