The inside of Karen and Darryl Dagenais’s house looks as if it’s under construction. No drywall, electrical switches or lights. And only a couple of plugs to power the kitchen appliances.

The two said they had to rip out all the plaster and insulation last year because it had been badly damaged from rain water poured into the house through the tarps serving as a temporary roof.

“It was basically like Niagara Falls in our home,” Karen said, adding the roof had been removed during a renovation project to add two more levels to their back-split home in Windsor’s Forest Glade area.

The Dagenais' home has no electrical fixtures or switches. Just a couple of outlets for kitchen appliances.

Karen has been living in the house, the way it is, off and on for about a year. The conditions are uncomfortable, she said.

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Officials said that nobody was injured after a house collapsed in Northwest DC on Monday afternoon.

DC Fire and EMS said that a two-story row house in the 3900 block of Kansas Ave. NW “suffered significant collapse” in the back.

“What we found was a two-story end-of-the-row structure. It’s under renovation and it suffered a significant collapse of the entire rear of the building,” said Vito Maggiolo, public information officer for DC Fire and EMS.

Khanh Do, who lives in the row home connected to the one that collapsed, said she was shaken up after seeing what happened.

“I feel a little shocked. I’m still trying to digest the whole thing,” said Do.

LISBON, ND — Snuggled in the Sheyenne River Valley, Lisbon’s main street is all abuzz. The renovated Lisbon Opera House is about to host a performance of the melodrama “Millie Monka and the Salmon Cannery.”

The opera house first opened in 1889. The idea for the latest production came as a suggestion from two women from New York who were visiting their mother, who lived in Lisbon. They started in June and finished in January. It costs $20,000.

“They got everything up and running with raising money and getting blueprints done, and getting the building built, and by December they were putting on a production,” said Opera House volunteer Doneen Fraase.

In the early 1900s, farm families drove horses and buggies to watch traveling performers.

“It sure brought a lot of people in, you know,” said Opera House volunteer David Olson.

“They carried all the musical instruments, and props and

For the first time in three years, Ontarians are spending less money on home improvements after reaching all-time highs during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).

Officials with MPAC told CTV News that home renovations are down across the province, but note that doesn’t appear to be the case in Windsor-Essex.

“Although we’re seeing about a 12 per cent decrease in residential permit activity overall in Ontario, [in the] Windsor-Essex area, what we’re really seeing there is a decline of about 6 per cent,” said Carmelo Lipsi, MPAC vice president and chief operating officer.

Lipsi said the decrease across the province could be credited to an increase in the cost of financing, with higher interest rates making things more expensive.

Also, homeowners are now spending renovation money on travel experiences instead of their homes.

“The cost of any renovations or permits now has gone up,”

If you are gathering information for your upcoming home renovation project, you may have learned that you should sign a written contract with your renovation professional. A contract helps to clarify roles, responsibilities and expectations and protects both you and the renovator. But did you know there are different types of renovation contracts?

Depending on the nature, duration and potential cost of a project, a renovator may propose one of three common types of contracts: the traditional, lump-sum contract; the design-build contract; or the construction management contract.

With a traditional, lump-sum contract, the home owner first works with a designer to develop what the renovation will look like. When the
