Homeowners easily influenced by property renovation shows: Study

CHICAGO (NewsNation) — Home makeover shows might influence owners to make choices that prioritize future buyers instead of what makes them happy in the present, a new study first reported in the Washington Post found.

Dr. Annetta Grant, an assistant professor of markets, innovation and design at Bucknell University, took a closer look at this with Jay Handelman, an associate professor of marketing at the Smith School of Business.

Grant’s research looked into how this type of media is making homeowners worried about being judged or scrutinized and how some go the neutral route while renovating and decorating instead of making bolder choices that express who they are.

After talking to 17 homeowners doing renovations, Grant found most of them wanted to make smart choices so their homes could be worth more down the line.

Ace of Clubs House renovation progressing

TEXARKANA, Texas — The Ace of Clubs House does not have any plans to open this summer, but the historical museum’s face lift continues, and the Museum of Regional History is open to tour.

“This is a massive project,” said Emily Tarr, executive director for the Texarkana Museum Systems, about the renovation happening at the Ace of Clubs House.

Last week, the removal of the plastic sheets surrounding the cupola took place and the installation of windows and frames in the house began. The museum is in the process of doing an entire interior and exterior renovation.

“The exterior is going to happen first,” Tarr said. “In the next couple of weeks, you’ll see scaffolding going up on the entire house.”

Tarr said next the plan is to start painting and patching the plaster.

“It has gone through basically 10-plus years of total neglect,” she said.

German Village renovation leads to headaches and awards

A one-bedroom German Village cottage built before the Civil War has been listed for $1.175 million after being gutted and expanded.

The rebuilt home received the German Village Society’s “Caretakers of the Legacy” award in 2021, but the award was hard-earned for owners Jim and Tammie Fisher.

The couple’s plan to simply update the home when they bought it in 2019 proved to be naïve, Jim Fisher said.

A small German Village cottage from 1860 was stripped to the bones during its 2020 renovation.

“As we got into it, we found out there were things that needed more attention than we thought,” he said.

“We hoped to save the hardwood floors, for example, and found out there wasn’t enough good material to do that, so we took the floor material and repurposed it for the range hood, the bathroom ceiling and other uses. The house also had an original slate roof that leaked. As we tried to fix the leaks, we discovered it was making it
