America’s obsession with renovating homes is finally coming to an end.

the trend that took over during the pandemic-triggered lockdown is now fading away, thanks in part to volatile economic conditions. The shift has started to impact companies such as Home Depot, one of the largest retailers in the US, which reaped the benefits of the trend over the past few years.

Quartz Smart Investing: Anna Han

Americans’ love for improving homes helped Home Depot’s revenue climb to a record $160 billion for the quarter ended on Jan. 31, 2023—up from $70 billion for the same period in 2008-2009.

But things are shaping up differently now. For the first time since 2009, Home Depot’s executives suspect a drop in its annual sales as they did observed that people are spending less on renovations and power tools.

Home Depot’s lackluster Q1 shows that the remodeling boom is over

Interest in big home improvement projects is waning. That’s one takeaway from Home Depot’s uninspired first-quarter results.

“The size of the projects are getting a bit smaller,” Home Depot (HD) CEO Ted Decker told analysts on the company’s first quarter earnings call Monday.

“It could be that the project [are] being deferred or it could be that the project is being broken up into chunks,” Decker said. “Rather than do an entire room or an entire basement, you start working it in smaller chunks and that clearly impacts items per basket in overall activity. “

On a yearly basis, customer transactions slid 4.8%, but came in better than Wall Street’s call for a 5.36% drop. Customers also spent less per ticket than anticipated, recording a 0.2% gain against expectations of a 2.63% boost in average ticket sizes.

Big-ticket transactions, or those over $1,000, were down 6.5% compared with the first

Stettler home improvement program entering final stages of approvals

A new program which will allow Stettler residents to make home improvements and pay for the renovations over time on their taxes is another step closer to reality after the May 2 council meeting.

Following a public hearing during the council meeting, where no submissions were received or presented either for or against the proposed programme, the final two readings of the bylaw were read.

The program, overseen by Alberta Municipalities but administered by the municipality, will allow residents of the community to apply to have proposed renovation work done on homes, such as replacing furnaces, windows, or other high-cost repairs that could be made to make a home more energy efficient paid for upfront by municipal affairs, then have things repaid over 25 as part of the annual tax levy.

To qualify for the program, homeowners will be required to undergo an energy audit before the renovations and again

Flooring & Decor: Becoming The Next Home Improvement Retail Giant (NYSE:FND)

Investment Thesis

Flooring & Decoration (NYSE:FND) is a hard-surface flooring retailer and distributor of commercial flooring with 191 warehouse-format stores and six small design studios in 33 states. With an experienced management team, the company lays out expansion plans to drive future store base growth by 20% per year. This gave FND the runway to grow into the next home improvement retail giant.

FND has also performed well financially over the last few years. Earnings per share rose 64%, and EPS jumped 83% from 2019 to 2021. However, FND is down more than 50% from its all-time high in December 2021 and has had a disappointing performance in 2022 due to the depressed housing market. This allows investors to buy these amazing growth companies at a significant discount in my opinion. So, I rate FND a “Strong Buy”.

After a beautiful week with the home stuffed with three generations combined in collectively, I am lastly sitting down and pulling collectively my ideas and concepts for this 12 months’s finish and hopefully a contented new 12 months for all of us.

Do you continue to make New 12 months’s resolutions? I am sorry to say that I do not. Name it laziness, name it lack of willpower or just me being practical about what I’m able to sticking too!

There was a time once I would declare resolutions to “bathroom remodeling Orlando”, or “hand over wine” or “resign desserts” and every useless promise would final a sizzling minute. At my age it is extra dignified to be pragmatic, do not you assume?

So this can be a resolution-free zone, however I do no less than love to make use of these final days of the 12 months

Home Improvement

When it comes to home improvements, the reason for summer projects is likely to fall into one of two categories.

Either you’re intending to complete projects that make sense to finalize in warm weather like painting, or you’re hoping to get tasks completed before it’s too cold out like fixing shingles.

Summer is also the perfect time to get your yard in a tip-top shape and add new elements to your indoor or outdoor space to enjoy the rest of the season.

5 DIY PROJECTS TO HELP SELL YOUR HOME

Here is a list of home improvement projects that are most ideal to complete during summer.

  1. Paint inside and outside
  2. Create a backyard oasis
  3. Install a pool
  4. Power wash
  5. Replace windows
  6. Work on the landscaping of your yard
  7. Start a garden

french blooms: shooting photos for a book

I’m excited to tell you about a new book, called French Blooms, published by my dear friend, Sandra Sigman.

French Blooms

French Blooms shares Sandra’s love of flowers, and illustrates her inspiration that comes in large part from the time she spent living in France. Creating a book is an adventure. From outlining the concept to the writing, the photography, and then of course finding a publisher, it feels like running a marathon.

I was privileged to run part of the race with Sandra when she visited me a few years ago. Sandra stayed with me here in Normandy, along with another friend, the über gifted photographer KIndra Clineff. They came to shoot for the book, and also shoot my garden for a magazine, and I honestly think that on that trip, Kindra took the best pictures I have ever had of our garden. Sandra also invited me to write the foreword

Resilient housing market benefits our home improvement, construction stocks

Posted on 30/06/2023 By Kartika

There are new signs of a resilient housing market and a home renovation rebirth with potentially bullish implications for three of our Club names. Shares of Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) and Caterpillar (CAT), whose tools and machinery are used in homebuilding, have been on the upswing in recent weeks. Additionally, after a lull in Covid-driven renovations, many would-be buyers are stuck in their homes due to a housing shortage as well as higher prices and mortgages rating are choosing to upgrade their current digs. Stanley Black & Decker’s brands appeal to Do-It-Yourself (DIY) folks as well as pro contractors and builders. On the decorating side for new homes and after renovations, TJX Companies’ (TJX) HomeGoods chain stands to benefit even more than during the pandemic because rivals Bed Bath & Beyond went bankrupt. Shares of SWK and CAT were trading up about 18% and 14%, respectively, over the past
