SANDY, Utah — At the Boyle family home in Sandy they have a motto, a phrase that guides Jeremy and Amelia and their six children.

“Amelia says if you have something good, share it,” neighbor Emilie Wright said. “That’s just the hallmark of her life, and so we have something good, and we want to share that with her.”

Over the last year, finding that good has been a challenge. Jeremey, 44, a marriage and family therapist, was diagnosed with a rare and terminal neurodegenerative condition called multiple system atrophy, and his body is shutting down.

“It’s difficult for him to get up and down the stairs, to function like he used to, he’s really active and handy and he’s not able to do that as well as he used to without a lot of pain,” said Wright.

Homeowners and local contractor square off over a Forest Glade renovation project

The inside of Karen and Darryl Dagenais’s house looks as if it’s under construction. No drywall, electrical switches or lights. And only a couple of plugs to power the kitchen appliances.

The two said they had to rip out all the plaster and insulation last year because it had been badly damaged from rain water poured into the house through the tarps serving as a temporary roof.

“It was basically like Niagara Falls in our home,” Karen said, adding the roof had been removed during a renovation project to add two more levels to their back-split home in Windsor’s Forest Glade area.

The Dagenais' home has no electrical fixtures or switches. Just a couple of outlets for kitchen appliances.

Karen has been living in the house, the way it is, off and on for about a year. The conditions are uncomfortable, she said.

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Officials said that nobody was injured after a house collapsed in Northwest DC on Monday afternoon.

DC Fire and EMS said that a two-story row house in the 3900 block of Kansas Ave. NW “suffered significant collapse” in the back.

“What we found was a two-story end-of-the-row structure. It’s under renovation and it suffered a significant collapse of the entire rear of the building,” said Vito Maggiolo, public information officer for DC Fire and EMS.

Khanh Do, who lives in the row home connected to the one that collapsed, said she was shaken up after seeing what happened.

“I feel a little shocked. I’m still trying to digest the whole thing,” said Do.

Homeowners easily influenced by property renovation shows: Study

House Renovation

CHICAGO (NewsNation) — Home makeover shows might influence owners to make choices that prioritize future buyers instead of what makes them happy in the present, a new study first reported in the Washington Post found.

Dr. Annetta Grant, an assistant professor of markets, innovation and design at Bucknell University, took a closer look at this with Jay Handelman, an associate professor of marketing at the Smith School of Business.

Grant’s research looked into how this type of media is making homeowners worried about being judged or scrutinized and how some go the neutral route while renovating and decorating instead of making bolder choices that express who they are.

After talking to 17 homeowners doing renovations, Grant found most of them wanted to make smart choices so their homes could be worth more down the line.

Ballman Khapalova renovates a “frugal and functional” New York house

Architecture studio Ballman Khapalova has renovated a 1980s ranch house in Saugerties, New York, to make it a contemporary home with maximized views of the surrounding landscape.

Ballman Khapalova extended Pine Lane House by 300 square feet and added a steel standing seam roof, external wood cladding and an outdoor deck.

“Since the original house typology is extremely economical, we wanted the renovation to be equally frugal and functional while also bringing an added layer of value, beauty and comfort that was not there originally,” studio founders Dasha Khapalova and Peter Ballman told Dezeen.

Khapalova and Ballman explained that the design aim was to “take a standard, conventional ranch house and transform it into something fresh and contemporary, specifically made for a young family and their needs”.

Revealing Tehran’s Corruption: Khamenei’s House Renovation at the Expense of Iranians

khamenei meeting foreign affairs ministry (1)

While Iranians can hardly make ends meet, a leaked letter shows how the ruling theocracy uses the national wealth to renovate and expand the house of its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in Mashhad.

The documents, obtained by the dissident group “Ghiyam ta Sarnegouni” during its infiltration of the regime’s presidential servers and sites, also indicate how vast amounts of money are squandered on the regime’s malign activities under the banner of supporting “knowledge-based companies.”

While the regime propagates a facade of modesty and austereness, the reality tells a different story. Document N. 1 provides damning evidence of the Islamic Revolution Cultural Research Institute shamelessly demanding exorbitant funds for the lavish renovation of Khamenei’s opulent residence in Mashhad. This blatant display of excess and indulgence is an affront to the Iranian people, who suffer under the regime’s repressive rule and dire economic conditions.

Adding insult to injury, Document N. 2 reveals

Ann Christensen and Reagan Miller always knew there were things they’d change in their modest North Edgemont bungalow. As their three boys got older, the spaces felt more cramped, the shady front yard never quite allowed grass to grow, and their kitchen was dark and far from functional.

Miller, a partner at the Reagan & Andre architecture firm, spent his time designing grand homes for clients, and Christensen was busy, too, in her job as an English professor — and eventually the department chair — at the University of Houston. Another factor was that the frugal native Midwesterners just didn’t want to spend the money for a massive makeover.

Today, though, Christensen walks through her home, noting how good it feels to have created a new foyer, realigned what were “jiggedy-jaggedy” doorways, reworked the kitchen and replaced

HGTV is making our homes boring and us sad, one study says

A pair of professors found that home renovation media leads homeowners to decorate for the masses, not for their own happiness

If you’ve ever watched a home makeover show on HGTV, you know the key “before” sequence. It’s when the camera critically pans over the house and the host points out everything that needs to be fixed. The décor? Cluttered. The paint? cringe. The overall takeaway is that the home is an utter embarrassment and needs a total overhaul before anyone of taste would consider putting a doormat out front.

But what happens when people consider how their own homes might fare under this kind of scrutiny? It can lead to an overwhelming sameness in aesthetics, according to Annetta Grant, an assistant professor of markets, innovation and design at Bucknell University, who
