On her first visit, 15 years ago, to the abandoned school complex that was to become her family home, Veva van Sloun was in for a surprise. Located in a busy area of Ghent, the old school was shielded from the main street by bamboo planting. Beyond the white gate she discovered it had a hidden courtyard garden, not to mention its own chapel. The site was much bigger than she anticipated. “It was so dilapidated that when I leaned against the wall some of the bricks crumbled and fell off,” she recalls.
Undeterred, she decided to take on the renovation. The chapel had been extended to house the school kitchen and gymnasium. These elements were removed to restore the chapel as a separate entity, giving van Sloun, her husband, Jan, and their children more space. “We had to take off the roof and rebuild it brick by brick

Within five years of moving to Europe, businessman Douglas Loewe “fell in love” with Barcelona, he said.
He decided to buy a home there, spending about 500,000 euros ($545,000) to purchase an apartment in the city’s famous Eixample neighborhood in 1999, the senior operating partner at Macquarie said.
But by 2017, Loewe felt the two-bedroom penthouse needed an overhaul.
The main living area of Loewe’s apartment in Barcelona, called Aribau 133 Sobre Atic.

Within a year, he had transformed the “deteriorated” two-bedroom penthouse into a three-bedroom space that is now worth 1.7 million to 2 million euros, Loewe said — more than double the amount he spent to purchase and renovate the property.
Loewe had renovated the apartment once before, but “it needed refreshing on a lot of levels” after almost 20 years, he said.
He hired Matthew Coe, founder of the property investment firm

The healthcare professionals who work at the Burk’s Falls Family Health Team are enjoying a much-needed face-lift to the health centre.
The employees are now working in a renovated facility which includes re-purposing the former emergency reception into office space.
Christine Barr is the Administrative Assistant for the Village of Burk’s Falls who also coordinates the health center’s administration.
Barr said one of the significant improvements includes how the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) can now operate at the facility.
“The OTN used to be in a small room and they regularly dealt with people with mobility challenges, like people with walkers,” Barr said. “So you’d have the nurse, the patient and a walker in a tiny area. But the bigger space has really improved matters.”

Fun fact: Cal Poly did not have a dedicated library building until 46 years after classes were first held on campus in San Luis Obispo in 1903.
Then known as the California Polytechnic School, a three-year secondary school, the future university had a modest start.
Cal Poly’s first library was next door to Cal Poly Director Leroy Anderson’s office in the original 1903 administration building. His secretary doubled as librarian.
In 1916, the library moved to the second floor of the science building later called Anderson Hall.
It was relocated to classroom units near the center of campus in 1939.
The library’s next stop was the second floor of the clock tower building, where it occupied six classrooms. That structure is now known as the Cotchett Education Building.
When the Dexter Library opened in September 1949, it was a $700,000 statement that the college was growing.
The library was named
The city is being asked to contribute millions of dollars to help cover the cost escalation on the major renovation of the Glenbow Museum.
The museum has asked the city for another $18 million.
Work is already well underway on the renovation of the Glenbow Museum, which will see it revamped with an entirely new look and modern features inside and out.
The president and CEO Nicholas Bell says the project’s budget is increasing though due to the rising cost of construction materials. Originally pegged to cost about $120 million, it’s now estimated that the project will come in at about $130 million.
“It’s the inflation we see across materials, it’s the inflation that we’ve seen essentially in everything that we would ever need to procure to change this
There’s no shortage of lamp shades at thrift stores and they’re usually very reasonably priced, which makes them the perfect DIY project! I have been swooning over pleated lamp shades for a while but they are pretty expensive! I’ll show you how to make your own for less money.
I found this little lamp base at a thrift store for $10 and couldn’t pass it up. It didn’t come with a lampshade so I bought this tapered lampshade online. For some reason when I bought it it was only $25 and now it’s double the price…suspicious! But you can check out thrift stores for cheaper ones.
There are several different ways to make a pleated lampshade and I followed some of the other tutorials first, using the whole fabric and folding it over. If your lampshade is in the shape of a drum then this method
A renovated flat by studio Nic Howett Architect that “feels like an oasis” has been named London’s best new home improvement project by Don’t Move Improve! 2023.
Named The Secret Garden Flat, the ground-floor home by Nic Howett Architect was selected as the overall winner from a shortlist of 15 revealed in April.
It was praised by the jury for demonstrating “how a very high standard of craftsmanship can be achieved with a low budget”.
“The Secret Garden is full of surprises,” said judge Marie-Louise Schembri, who is sustainability director at engineering consultant Hilson Moran.
“This beautiful home in a very busy and dense urban part of London feels like an oasis and has consolidated the existing neighborhood and family communities,” she continued.
“The transformation process tells a story of vision, perversion, collaboration and organic growth.”
