The first of 98 base isolators has been installed as part of the ongoing Salt Lake Temple renovations, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced this week.

Base isolators are mechanical devices that isolate the earth’s movement from the building above during a seismic event, according to the Church’s news release on ChurchofJesusChrist.org dated May 23. A single base isolator weighs 18,000 pounds but can carry a weight of 8 million pounds. Installing isolators will allow the temple to move horizontally up to five feet in any direction during an earthquake.

The first base isolator was placed May 3 on the new footing on the temple’s west side. The new footings surround the towers on the east and west ends of the temple, extending down 35 feet and away from the original structure.

The base isolator’s installation marks a major milestone for the renovation project that began in

A new home renovation show set in Charlotte is back for another season.

‘Artfully Designed’ is a new series on Magnolia Network that showcases the work of local designer Natalie Papier, muralist Racheal Jackson and abstract artist Frankie Zombie as they take an “art-forward approach” to transform different rooms in homes around the Charlotte area.

The cable series, which originally aired in 2022, has been picked up for a second season and will be filmed starting next month.

Unlike most home renovation shows, this group of “design misfits” — as they call themselves — focus primarily on art and what they can do to revamp rooms of a home from the inside out. That could be painting a mural on the ceiling of a room or giving a bathroom

MOULTRIEGa. — Renovation and demolition of Willie J. Williams Middle School and CA Gray Middle School could begin in the next five years if voters approve Colquitt County School Districts’ upcoming ESPLOST.

“Since the fall of the school year ’21-22, the Board of Education has been working closely with Altman + Barrett Architects to look at options for addressing school building age and size with respect to enrollment. A full facility review was conducted. Architectural engineers and members of the BOE evaluate building age, infrastructure needs, growth or decline in registrations, and other problems with maintenance and use of facilities,” said the district’s chief communications officer, Angela Hobby, via email Tuesday.

The facility project will be funded by the forthcoming ESPLOST fund – Educational Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax – fund. The district’s current ESPLOST funds will expire in September 2023, while the new plan (if approved by

More questions over FirstOntario Center renovation timeline

Renovation

Just in case there weren’t enough unknowns about the construction timetable for the promised renovations to FirstOntario Centre, a new puzzle has emerged.

The company that produces Disney On Ice says the popular skating show will make its annual visit to the arena next year.

“Our dates for the 2024 Disney On Ice in Hamilton at FirstOntario Center have been confirmed but have not been announced at this time,” Feld Entertainment said in an email to The Spectator.

That would surely be happy news for families who look forward to the show’s annual visit that traditionally lands on March break.

But hold on a second. The local group behind the $100-million-plus construction project says there are no shows of any kind planned in the new year because long-awaited renovations will be starting.

“ … (I) can simply share that there are no plans of booking into 2024, which we confirmed

CHARLOTTETOWN – The Prince Edward Island legislature was supposed to reopen some time this year after eight years of renovations and repairs, but Parks Canada now says that won’t happen.

“Parks Canada acknowledged that the project will take longer than anticipated,” the federal agency said in a statement released Monday. “Once all tendering processes are complete, Parks Canada will be in a better position to provide more information about … the estimated completion date.”

The conservation project, which started in 2015, has cost the federal government $91.8 million so far, and the bills are still coming in.

Parks Canada said bids for the third phase of the project were higher than expected, prompting a new round of tenders that have yet to be published.

The third phase calls for interior painting, heritage woodwork and new flooring, as well as a new elevator and upgrades for plumbing, electrical, ventilation and fire
