With home improvement projects down, it’s Ikea’s moment

New York
CNN

Aspiring home owners are finding the housing market to be pretty grim lately. With record-high mortgage rates, expensive insurance, and a limited selection of pricey homes, many are staying put — whether they want to or not.

But the bleach outlook could be a boon for Ikea, a budget furniture seller that appeals to people who need to furnish small spaces, can’t spend much and don’t expect products to last very long.

With “people maybe not being able to get into that dream house right now, whether for affordability or availability … they’re looking for solutions that might not be as permanent,” said Michael Brown, partner in the consulting firm Kearney’s consumer products and retail practice. He added that unlike its competitors, Ikea’s offerings work well in smaller spaces. “I actually think the environment is ripe for them to go and expand at this point in

french blooms: shooting photos for a book

I’m excited to tell you about a new book, called French Blooms, published by my dear friend, Sandra Sigman.

French Blooms

French Blooms shares Sandra’s love of flowers, and illustrates her inspiration that comes in large part from the time she spent living in France. Creating a book is an adventure. From outlining the concept to the writing, the photography, and then of course finding a publisher, it feels like running a marathon.

I was privileged to run part of the race with Sandra when she visited me a few years ago. Sandra stayed with me here in Normandy, along with another friend, the über gifted photographer KIndra Clineff. They came to shoot for the book, and also shoot my garden for a magazine, and I honestly think that on that trip, Kindra took the best pictures I have ever had of our garden. Sandra also invited me to write the foreword

You’re ready to tackle your next home improvement project, and all you need is a contractor to take on the job. While it may be convenient to use the contractor who left a flyer at your door, homeowners should use caution when choosing a contractor to avoid getting caught in a scam.

Home improvement scams are on the rise—in 2021, the median loss from home improvement scams was $1,700. Scams also tend to increase following a weather event or during the warmer months. Before you sign any contracts or checks, keep these 10 common cons in mind to avoid becoming a victim of a home improvement scam.

‘Home Improvement’ star Zachery Ty Bryan downplays domestic violence allegation: ‘Blown out of proportion’

“Home Improvement” star Zachery Ty Bryan downplayed a 2020 altercation between him and Johnnie Faye Cartwright, who at the time was the actor’s secret girlfriend.

Bryan, who had been seeing Cartwright for two years while married, was arrested in October 2020 and charged with felony strangulation, fourth-degree assault, coercion, fishing, harassment and interference with making a police report. The police dropped the charges besides fishing and fourth-degree assault, and Bryan chose to plead guilty.

He now says the arrest “got so blown out of proportion” and downplayed the events that occurred in a new interview.

“We didn’t even really get that physical. We got really loud. We were screaming and because we were in a townhome that had [thin walls]everybody could hear,” Bryan told The Hollywood Reporter. “Johnnie was, at the time, just really upset about my situation.”

Ask Angi: What are the biggest upcoming home shopping trends?

The last few years have seen major changes in our lifestyles and spending, and our homes are no exception. Angi’s Household Expense Report for 2022 shows how things have changed this year, and what you can expect for 2023.

The single biggest impact on home spending in recent years has, of course, been the pandemic. As homeowners hunker down in their homes for most of 2020, they are thinking less about how home improvements can affect value, and instead how they will change and improve their lifestyles as everyone stays home more.

Now that many pre-pandemic activities and behaviors have returned, how has this affected household expenses? Angie surveyed 6,500 consumers to determine what is most important to them. It turns out that lifestyle needs are still the main driver. Prior to 2020, “return on investment” was the top motivator for home improvement spending in the Angi survey. This year,

Home Depot Expects Sales Growth to Return When Market Stabilizes

By DeanSeal

Home Depot said Tuesday that it expects sales growth to return at a rate of about 3% to 4% per year once the home improvement market stabilizes.

The home improvement retailer provided a market stability base case outlook ahead of its 2023 Investor and Analyst Conference, saying it expects the overall home improvement market to swing back up to low-single digit growth.

“Once the home improvement market returns to stability, we expect to see sales growth consistent with how our business has performed in the past,” said Chief Financial Officer Richard McPhail.

Under this base case, the company expects its gross margin rate to remain flat and for earnings per share to grow in the mid-to high-single digit percentage range.

McPhail said the outlook assumes share capture, though Home Depot isn’t ruling out a case for even higher growth.

Home Depot also backed its guidance for sales to

getting grand with flowers – MY FRENCH COUNTRY HOME

I was recently lucky enough to spend 24 hours in the Loire Valley. We have a tour there at the end of August, and I need to check some addresses – never a hardship!

I had heard about the amazing flowers at the Chateau de Chenonceaux, and was determined to see what all the fuss was about.

I was not disappointed. They know a lot about getting grand with flowers!

Chenonceaux itself is a truly stunning chateaux that spans the Cher river from bank to bank. The history of the place dates back to the 16th century, and each age brings its own highlights. From hunting lodges for Kings, to a hospital during the war; to safe passage out of occupied France during the second world war, it has seen some true adventures.

Today Chenonceaux welcomes visitors from around the world, and to make their visit even more enjoyable, the
