Home Depot

continues to see a tough year ahead for the home improvement market, the company said at its latest investor conference, but there’s still a glimmer of hope ahead.

Home Depot

(ticker: HD) repeated its fiscal-year sales and same-store sales numbers on Tuesday—both declining from 2% to 5% from the year before. It expects earnings per share to fall from 7% to 13%. Operating margin will range between 14.3% and 14.0%.

Last month, the world’s largest home-improvement retailer cut its guidance when it reported first-quarter earnings. The retailer pointed to softening consumer spending—a sentiment management reiterated on Tuesday, calling 2023 a year of “moderating demand.”

“We don’t quite know what the Fed’s posture will be, we don’t quite know what the follow-up form the consumer will be,” said Chief Financial Officer Richard McPhail.

And while McPhail didn’t forecast how

Home Improvement

Spring is kickoff season for many kitchen remodels, bathroom updates and deck repairs, but recent economic turmoil may have homeowners questioning their home improvement plans.

Spending on home renovations is expected to slow this year because of factors such as declining home sales and values, rising interest rates, continuing inflation and rumblings of a coming recession, says Abbe Will, senior research associate with Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies.

As economic growth slows down, planning and prioritizing will be key to remodeling confidently. Here are five tips to help you remodel in an uncertain economy.

Even when the economy is doing well, it’s ideal to have an emergency fund before starting a remodel, says Eric Maldonado, a certified financial planner based in San Luis Obispo, California.

“What you’re trying to avoid is starting with nothing saved, taking out debt to afford these things and not really providing yourself with

MFCH MAGAZINE MAY/JUNE
Cover photo by Frederic Ducout

May is one of the busiest moments in my year. The garden needs attention, our MFCH Tours pick up speed and social life here gets busy again after the quieter winter.

My favorite time of the day is when I can finally sit and relax and flip through the MFCH Magazine. The May/June issue is a particular favorite of mine because it is full of beautiful homes and gardens around France in the springtime. Putting our magazine together every two months is rather like making a large, colorful cocktail. We always try to include the right blend of interiors, gardens, recipes and in-depth portraits. It is a privilege for me to have this place to showcase so much of what I love about France.

I’m particularly excited about the home featured on the cover. A mini chateau, renovated by designer Arthur van der Straeten, and

A cool down across Windsor-Essex when it comes to home improvements compared to a busy period during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation, which tracks property data across the province of Ontario, reports residential home improvement permits decreased by almost 6.8 per cent in 2022 in this area compared to 2021.

These permits were for home improvements including renovations, additions, swimming pools, sheds, garages and decks.

Carmelo Lipsi, MPAC Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, said as a result of COVID-19 restrictions being lifted, people are spending more money on travel and experiences while rising interest rates and borrowing costs have increased prices for construction projects.

If you’re looking to upgrade your home, you may be able to save thousands of dollars by taking advantage of the Reduced Inflation Act, which includes tax credits and cash rebates on certain energy-efficient purchases.

When Paul Hope renovated his house, he tried to make eco-friendly choices. That includes switching from a gas stove to an electric stove.

“I’ve always preferred gas cooking, but I know electric and induction cooktops have gotten a lot better over the years and a lot better for the environment,” says Hope.

With funding from Congress, the Reduced Inflation Act means homeowners can take advantage of up to $14,000 in rebates and tax credits to make energy efficiency improvements.

How much you can earn depends on how much you earn, where you live, and what upgrades you make.

If you’re looking to upgrade to a more eco-friendly hob, like Hope does, a discount of up
