Psychology of colors: Influencing emotions through thoughtful interior design

The thoughtful use of color in interior design has the ability to dramatically affect our general well-being by shaping our emotions, affecting our mood, and shaping our perception of a space. Colors have a wonderful capacity to elicit emotional reactions in us, from the fiery reds that stoke desires to the calming blues that inspire tranquilly. The fascinating topic of color psychology is centered around this phenomenon. We can design places that go beyond aesthetics by understanding the psychological consequences of color. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “Principle of Color Harmony” is one significant thought in this area.

Not traditional yet far from modern, contemporary interior design can feel like the best of all words. Audrey Scheck of Audrey Scheck Design tells me, “While modern design refers to a specific time period, contemporary design is a more loose term designing both current and future design trends. Contemporary design evolves as interior design trends come and go.”

Current contemporary spaces have an easy, warm feel to them. Far from formulaic, they can be eclectic or even fun. Whether you’re currently designing a contemporary space or just refreshing an old one, here are nine contemporary design tips shared by expert interior designers.

How I create living rooms that showcase your unique style |

The living room is arguably the most important room in the house. It is where we spend most of our time with family and friends. It is public-facing and often receives the lion’s share of the soft furnishing and decoration budget.

I recommend taking an artistic approach when designing living rooms. It’s a fun and exciting way to express yourself and showcase your unique style. The objective is to immerse yourself in a space that you love surrounded by objects that are meaningful. I can think of nothing better than to be enveloped by what you love. It is an equal privilege to be invited to share in someone else’s living space when it reflects who they are.

Here’s how you can get started on your very home personal living space.

1. Choose a color scheme that you like

This Midcentury Portland Home’s Transformation Took Nearly Five Years

Casey Keasler values experiential learning. The founder of interior design firm Casework recently completed a nearly five-year renovation of her 1966 Portland, Oregon, home, which she affectionately calls the “Ranchalow” thanks to its ranch-meets-bungalow vibe. “I used the house as a bit of a testing ground,” the designer says. “Doing a lot of the work myself gave me a better understanding of the details and process, which strengthened the design as well as my relationships with vendors and tradespeople.”

In conceiving a design scheme for the 1,250-square-foot mid-century home that would suit her needs and reflect her personal style, Casey followed the same process as she does for all her clients. “We are very calculated as we develop the palette and vision, and always set three key phrases,” she explains. For her own home they are: “golden hour”—the warmth and glow of that really beautiful September sunshine; “easy like Sunday

A Couple’s Old Furniture Collection Got a Cool Spin in Their New San Francisco Home

Even before they’d signed the deed or put down a deposit, Caitlin O’Neill and Sean Weinstock knew who they’d bring in for the interior design of their new home in San Francisco’s Glen Park neighborhood: Christina Higham of Sun Soul Style Interiors . It didn’t matter that Christina was based in Kauai, or that they’d just finished renovating their previous home. By two years into their marriage, they knew they needed a bigger place. And as for Christina taking the lead from 2,500 miles away, the couple wasn’t ruffled. The three had a comfortable working relationship: Caitlin and Christina were former colleagues, and Sean—a real estate agent—had worked closely with the designer on several client remodels. “Christina had helped design our previous home in 2020 and we got her to come see our new one before we even bought it,” says Caitlin, a public policy strategist.
