Fifty West Brewing Co. recently announced the highly anticipated reopening of Brewpub in Columbia Township, in the greater Cincinnati area. The full-service restaurant, now under the direction of renowned Cincinnati Chef Jackson Rouse, formerly of Bauer Farm Kitchen, promises to bring back the authentic dining experiences customers love.
After an eight year tenure, Fifty West Brewpub closed temporarily in 2020 due to financial and operational pressures during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Fifty West team then turned their focus across the street to their family-friendly concept, Burger Bar. Spacious outdoor beer gardens complete with walkup order windows and fast food service are proving to be a far superior path to weather the storm of the pandemic. While Burger Bar was met with great enthusiasm and success, many brewery enthusiasts have consistently voiced their desire for a return to the original restaurant and brewery.
On her first visit, 15 years ago, to the abandoned school complex that was to become her family home, Veva van Sloun was in for a surprise. Located in a busy area of Ghent, the old school was shielded from the main street by bamboo planting. Beyond the white gate she discovered it had a hidden courtyard garden, not to mention its own chapel. The site was much bigger than she anticipated. “It was so dilapidated that when I leaned against the wall some of the bricks crumbled and fell off,” she recalls.
Undeterred, she decided to take on the renovation. The chapel had been extended to house the school kitchen and gymnasium. These elements were removed to restore the chapel as a separate entity, giving van Sloun, her husband, Jan, and their children more space. “We had to take off the roof and rebuild it brick by brick
Jacksonville Jaguars hired architectural firm HOK to serve as a design consultant for the proposed TIAA Bank Field renovation, team president Mark Lamping told VenuesNow last week.
“It’s not a project yet,” Lamping told VenuesNow. “We want to be in a place where we know what a renovated stadium looks like and how do you renovate while still trying to play an NFL game. We are in a good place. If we do go ahead, we will basically get a new stadium built on top of the existing structure.”
In October, Lamping notified the Florida Times-Union that Jaguar was in the early stages of designing renovations to the team’s stadium. According to VenuesNow, HOK won the job over seven competitors who all submitted initial concepts for the job.

Change is on the horizon for Whidbey Island’s oldest library.
The Langley Library, which has been part of Village by the Sea for almost a century, will receive a much-anticipated update in the new year regarding the building’s accessibility and functionality.
The $2 million renovation project, which could start as early as February, will make better use of the library space downstairs and create meeting space for the public, among other things.
In 2021, the Sno-Isle Library received a $700,000 capital-boosting grant from the state for the project. In addition, the library system contributed $1.2 million and Friends of the Langley Library raised $30,000.
Since 2022, representatives from the Sno-Isle Library have met with members of the community, Langley City Council, the city’s Design Review Board, and the Historical Preservation Commission to gather input on proposed renovation plans.

GLASGOW — A unique construction project is an underway at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Glasgow. Volunteers, including some who drove several hours from out of state, are helping complete the month-long renovation of the building.
The project is also highlighting the role of women in construction.
Husband and wife Gavin and Ellie Oakman are helping install insulation in the Kingdom Hall. They made a roughly eight and a half hour drive from Laramie, Wyoming to Glasgow to do the work.

“We enjoy the work. Even though some of the tasks aren’t the most enjoyable, it’s fun to be helping on a Kingdom Hall, on a place of worship like this. It’s so enjoyable being with our friends. Even though most of the people here we don’t know, we leave at the end of the week having friends that we’re going to stay in touch with,” Gavin
