The Cal Poly library is undergoing a $77 million renovation. What was it like in the 1970s?

Fun fact: Cal Poly did not have a dedicated library building until 46 years after classes were first held on campus in San Luis Obispo in 1903.

Then known as the California Polytechnic School, a three-year secondary school, the future university had a modest start.

Cal Poly’s first library was next door to Cal Poly Director Leroy Anderson’s office in the original 1903 administration building. His secretary doubled as librarian.

In 1916, the library moved to the second floor of the science building later called Anderson Hall.

It was relocated to classroom units near the center of campus in 1939.

The library’s next stop was the second floor of the clock tower building, where it occupied six classrooms. That structure is now known as the Cotchett Education Building.

When the Dexter Library opened in September 1949, it was a $700,000 statement that the college was growing.

The library was named

Whitehorse’s Beringia Center reopens after 5-month renovation

Whitehorse’s Beringia Interpretive Center re-opens its doors this weekend after a five-month closure for renovations — and visitors are being promised a more engaging and interactive experience of Yukon’s Ice Age history.

“Change was a constant thing in the Yukon in the past,” said territorial government paleontologist Grant Zazula, who was involved in the facility’s overhaul.

“Extinction, survival and change through time was really what we wanted to get across.”

The center, just off the Alaska Highway, is home to skeletons, fossils, and other exhibits that aim to tell the story of life in the Yukon through the ages. Beringia refers to the land bridge that once connected Alaska and Siberia, over which humans and wildlife migrated into North America tens of thousands of years ago.

A large building is seen from the outside with a sign on the outside saying 'Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre.'

Belmont Park renovation work could bring the Breeders’ Cup to New York in the future

The home of the third and final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown is finally getting a major makeover.

A little over a year from now, after it hosted the Belmont Stakes in 2024, Belmont Park is set to undergo a $455 million renovation of everything from the track surface to a new, smaller grandstand more fit for the sport in the modern era.

Once completed, the track should host the best horses in the world for a Breeders’ Cup in the not-too-distant future, but the expected construction timeline raises the question of where the 2025 Belmont will take place. New York Racing Association president and CEO Dave O’Rourke expects a clearer answer on that in the coming months when the project is further along.

The 1 1/2-mile race known as “the test of the champion” has been run before at Aqueduct in Queens, from 1963-67 when Belmont Park was

How Home Depot’s CEO is navigating the remodeling dip

The Home Depot deftly navigated the pandemic disruption under former CEO Craig Menear, riding the home improvement boom to annual sales growth in the tens of billions of dollars. Before Menear, who stepped down last year, was Frank Blake, who successfully guided the retailer from 2007 to 2014 through the housing market crisis. In short, both CEOs are tough acts to follow.

Under CEO Ted Decker, appointed last year, sales have edged down after rising 43% to $157 billion between 2019 and 2022, as consumers shift spending back to leisure and away from home improvement. What’s more, home renovations are projected to decline in 2024 after a decade of continuous growth, according to a report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. But Decker says getting Home Depot through this slump is not by any means a turnaround story. Nor does he want to be a “caretaker”

Living with a renovation: Preparation, communication are key

Renovation projects can be very disruptive and stressful. If you are like most people renovating, you cannot easily vacate your home and must find ways to live alongside the work. Luckily, there are ways to prepare.

Communicating with your renovator is a big part of the process. Work with your renovator to draw up a project plan that best accommodates your family’s needs. Talk to your renovator about your household’s daily schedule, any vacations that you have planned and any special circumstances that need to be accommodated, so they can factor into the work plan and schedule for your project. This way, particularly disruptive or messy parts of the project, such as refinishing hardwood floors, can be arranged for when you are away or otherwise accommodated around your family’s schedule.

Make sure you discuss which parts of your house will be affected by your renovation project. Depending on factors, such

How to Plan Raised Garden Beds

Spring is just around the corner and one of the things I’ve been wanting to add to our backyard this year is a raised garden bed. Or maybe some 😉 I’m still a newbie to the world of gardening so I wanted to make sure I did my research before jumping into building and planting them. If you want to do the same this year then I hope this post helps you start your garden bed journey with confidence!

The breadth of my gardening really started last year when we built a Grade Two Herbal Cultivator and I was instantly hooked. I love to get out on the deck and chop up herbs to use in our meals. So are the kids! They loved watching them grow and we even planted our first tomato! I know they will enjoy this larger bed as much as I do.
