Taniya Nayak is everywhere these days.

Maybe you’ve seen her coaching her team in Season 3 of the design competition “Battle on the Beach” or working alongside co-host Shane Duffy to treat deserving homeowners to makeovers in Season 2 of “Build It Forward.”

Given she’s been around the block on the HGTV circuit, we wanted to hear her perspective on what really happens behind the scenes of a reality TV show. So we asked, and she answered! She shares some surprising details (including the “Battle on the Beach” alliance few know exists), plus some smart design tips she’s learned along the way that she thinks every home owner should keep in mind.

“People think that I’m very tough,” says interior designer Robert Stilin from his New York office. He’s talking to his friend and collaborator Simon Stewart — the founder of Charles Burnand Gallery in London — who says in response: “I think Robert’s like a big teddy bear. His projects have included Manhattan apartments, a family home in Louisville, Kentucky, and Hamptons retreats. “It’s curation beyond curation,” says Stewart of Stilin’s casually elegant design signature.

Kingdom Hall renovation underway in Glasgow

GLASGOW — A unique construction project is an underway at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Glasgow. Volunteers, including some who drove several hours from out of state, are helping complete the month-long renovation of the building.

The project is also highlighting the role of women in construction.

Husband and wife Gavin and Ellie Oakman are helping install insulation in the Kingdom Hall. They made a roughly eight and a half hour drive from Laramie, Wyoming to Glasgow to do the work.

“We enjoy the work. Even though some of the tasks aren’t the most enjoyable, it’s fun to be helping on a Kingdom Hall, on a place of worship like this. It’s so enjoyable being with our friends. Even though most of the people here we don’t know, we leave at the end of the week having friends that we’re going to stay in touch with,” Gavin

Ireland Is Giving People $92,000 To Renovate a Home

Ever wanted to pack your bags, move to a remote island, and dive head-first into a home renovation project? Ireland’s making your dream a reality—well, sort of.

The Irish government recently revealed its Our Living Lands pledge, a 10-year national policy to revitalize the islands off their western coast. Per the initiative, Ireland will give individuals €84,000 (approximately $92,000) to refurbish vacant or run-down homes on 30 of the country’s islands. The goal, according to the Irish government is to strengthen the islands’ communities and increase their population.

For many, this seems like a great opportunity to spend time in Ireland—which, don’t get us wrong, it is. However, in this corner of the internet, we’re seeing it as an opportunity to live out our dreams as professional home renovators. (Do you hear that HGTV? We’re ready for our closeup!)

Yes, it’s true, the cool house on the block always has a pool. But we don’t blame you if you don’t want to spend all your time and money installing and maintaining one. A slightly easier and less expensive way to make your backyard the official destination of summer is with an above ground pool. The typical above-ground pool cost is a fraction of what you’d spend on an inground one.

An above ground pool has rigid sides with supports and sits on top of the ground rather than down in it like a vinyl or fiberglass pool. They come as deep as four feet—so no diving, please—and as big as 12-by-24 feet, so they can hold a few friends but not a big party. And yes, technically, hot tubs are just small above ground pools with more powerful heaters, but here we’re talking about large, cannonball-worthy swimming pools.

Ace of Clubs House renovation progressing

TEXARKANA, Texas — The Ace of Clubs House does not have any plans to open this summer, but the historical museum’s face lift continues, and the Museum of Regional History is open to tour.

“This is a massive project,” said Emily Tarr, executive director for the Texarkana Museum Systems, about the renovation happening at the Ace of Clubs House.

Last week, the removal of the plastic sheets surrounding the cupola took place and the installation of windows and frames in the house began. The museum is in the process of doing an entire interior and exterior renovation.

“The exterior is going to happen first,” Tarr said. “In the next couple of weeks, you’ll see scaffolding going up on the entire house.”

Tarr said next the plan is to start painting and patching the plaster.

“It has gone through basically 10-plus years of total neglect,” she said.
