Fashionable furniture: The hotels in Europe put design center stage

When selecting furnishing, “hotels are normally looking for something a bit more wow in terms of installation and maybe larger in scale,” designer Alexander Lamont says.

One of the latest hotel openings in Istanbul is VAKKO Hotel & Residence, located in the upmarket Nişantaşı neighborhood.

It feels like staying in a design showroom – the corridors are paneled with sleek black marble, the rooms have contemporary sculptures on display and the restaurant captures the style of a chic Parisian bistro.

This is the first hospitality venture of Turkish fashion house VAKKO and joins a growing trend of design-led hotels where stylish furniture and stand-alone interior pieces take center stage.

Alexander Lamont is a Bangkok-based, British designer known for his furniture, lighting collections, art and accessories.

Located in Akashi, japan, the recently completed ‘House in Hayashisaki Matsue Beach’ is designed by architecture studio Akio Isshiki Architects. A pre-existing coastal dwelling has been renovated to create a mixed-use project including a ground-level restaurant topped by the designer’s residence and office. The architects aim for an harmonious fusion of various elements, including function, culture and nationality, time and space, town and house, and work and life. By embracing the cultural background of the area while incorporating materials and techniques from foreign countries, the team sought to breathe new life into this ‘multinational house.’

Elegant, discreet and minimalistic—these are some of the defining traits of renowned French design maestro Christian Liaigre’s stellar work. The late designer and his eponymous brand Liaigre continue to be recognized worldwide for a signature look that is both polished as well as tastefully understated. A Singaporean couple who are ardent admirers of Liaigre’s work sought to incorporate some of the French brand’s most notable designs into their semi-detached house. They felt that their 4,600 sq ft property in Singapore’s Bukit Timah needed a major overhaul to meet their needs, and for the Liaigre furnishings and other designer pieces to fit beautifully within the interior.
