Halifax Forum renovation plans push forward

Halifax Regional Council is pushing forward with a site and building plan for the possible redevelopment of the Halifax Forum.

On Tuesday night, the council directed the chief administrative officer to provide more details on the potential project, shortly.

“I think we have to bite the bullet on this and get something done,” said Halifax Major Mike Savage.

Two years ago, the cost to tear down and rebuild the Forum facility, which included two rinks and two community halls, was roughly $80 million.

It has now soared to $110 million.

Savage said the city needs to make a decision soon.

“The only thing that scares me more than $110 million today is what it might be in two years if we don’t do something,” said Savage.

Neil Samson has been using the Forum parking lot as a taxi stand for the past 35 years.

Rick Ross is set to expand his kingdom soon with the pending purchase of a luxury crib smack dab in the celeb hotbed of Miami Beach’s secluded Star Island.

Sources with direct knowledge of the sale tell TMZ Hip Hop … Rozay is under contract to buy a 6-bedroom, 9-bathroom mansion for a cool $37 million!!!

We’re told the sale is expected to close in the next few weeks, and Ross plans on shelling out even more big dough to renovate the palace to his liking.

The house has been on the market since May and sports 40,000 sq. ft., along with royal amenities such as a heated pool, a summer kitchen, an entertainment room, and plaza deck terraces throughout.

Home renovation contractor charged with fraud

City police have charged a man they say defrauded a couple over home renovation work he was expected to perform for them.

A couple seeking to revamp their northwest Calgary home contacted local firm Envision Custom Renovations in December of last year, say police.

“Between January and April 2023, the victims had several disagreements with the hired contractor, which included the victims being invoiced for sub-contractor materials, several scheduling delays and work not being completed within the agreed upon timeframe,” city police said in a press release.

“In April 2023, the victims discovered the invoices provided by the contractor, that they paid for, were fraudulent and contacted the police.”

It’s alleged the contractor altered and forged the billings by presenting them as subcontractor invoices and collected money through his business.

Vancouver homebuilder calls out the city’s ‘broken system’ for renovation permits – BC

The paperwork needed to do a bathroom renovation in Vancouver is extensive and expensive, according to a local homebuilder.

Avi Barzelai, a licensed residential builder and renovator based out of East Vancouver, highlighted the process in a Twitter thread that’s gone viral.

“Working with the City of Vancouver is the absolute worst part of my job, by far,” Barzelai, who operates the Barzelai Building, told Global News in an interview Wednesday. “I deal with clients, I deal with trades, I deal with a lot of headaches. It’s nothing personal to the (city) staff, it’s the system. The system is broken.”

Barzelai said there are 10 steps that must be met before any work can even begin.

These steps include reports, inspections, permits, and surveys which, at minimum, will cost close to $10,000 he said.

Whitehorse’s Beringia Interpretive Center re-opens its doors this weekend after a five-month closure for renovations — and visitors are being promised a more engaging and interactive experience of Yukon’s Ice Age history.

“Change was a constant thing in the Yukon in the past,” said territorial government paleontologist Grant Zazula, who was involved in the facility’s overhaul.

“Extinction, survival and change through time was really what we wanted to get across.”

The center, just off the Alaska Highway, is home to skeletons, fossils, and other exhibits that aim to tell the story of life in the Yukon through the ages. Beringia refers to the land bridge that once connected Alaska and Siberia, over which humans and wildlife migrated into North America tens of thousands of years ago.
