Text description provided by the Interior Designers. The interior design of Jan Juc Acre responds to the local environment and community, to the original 1980s house, and to the personalities within the family that lives here. Each of these contexts informed interior design decisions. Driven by our client, the retention of the majority of the original building was a priority for both the interior and building design.

“People think that I’m very tough,” says interior designer Robert Stilin from his New York office. He’s talking to his friend and collaborator Simon Stewart — the founder of Charles Burnand Gallery in London — who says in response: “I think Robert’s like a big teddy bear. He’s very kind and generous.” He added, “There’s almost no compromise with Robert. He knows what he wants to achieve.”

Wisconsin-born Stilin is an interior-design superstar in the US with high-profile clients such as Starbucks founder Howard Schultz, fashion designer Fernando Garcia (the co-creative director of Oscar de la Renta) and, most importantly, “the Carters” . His projects have included Manhattan apartments, a family home in Louisville, Kentucky, and Hamptons retreats. “It’s curation beyond curation,” says Stewart of Stilin’s casually elegant design signature.

IKEA is training call center workers to become interior design advisers as the Swedish furniture giant aims to offer more home improvement services and hand run-of-the-mill customer queries to an artificial intelligence bot called Billie.

In April, IKEA expanded its interior design services to the UK and United States, after previously launching in parts of Europe, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere. In the UK, customers pay £25 ($31.44) for a 45-60 minute interior design advice video call and suggested product list, and can pay £125 for three workspace design consultations, a floor plan and 3D visuals.

Ingka says it has trained 8,500 call center workers as interior design advisers since 2021, while Billie – launched the same year with a name inspired by IKEA’s Billy bookcase range – has handled 47

This Midcentury Oakland Home Is Inspired by Hollywood Regency and Travel Memories

When they’re not busy traveling to faraway locales, Shasta and Jen Scobie can almost always be found at the nearest (or furthest) thrift store, foraging for discarded pottery studios and other curious novelties. “I didn’t start traveling until my late 20s, but once I did, I made it a priority and collected many treasures over the years,” says Shasta, a strategic program manager for a tech company. And yet, the couple’s collection had little room to shine. “We had just three pieces of furniture: a bed, a couch and a table. Everything else was relegated to the sidelines and the house was more or less empty,” adds Jen, an engineering manager for a tech company. That is until the pandemic, when months of being indoors exposed the home’s shortcomings—and left them longing for a redesign. Luckily, they knew just the person for the job: dear friend and interior designer Nick

An Interior Design Expert Clarifies The One Spot You Shouldn’t Put A Laundry Room

Basements are also typically far from the main area, which can make it inconvenient to access the laundry room. You won’t be able to just pop in to check the progress, and laundry becomes more energy-consuming than it needs to be when you have to carry full laundry baskets up and down the house. This inconvenience especially poses problems for people with mobility issues — older family members in the household who want to do laundry may not be able to do it safely.

Space allocation is another thing to consider. Basements often serve as multi-purpose areas, such as storage, recreational spaces, or home offices. Using it as a laundry room may take up valuable space that could be better utilized for other purposes. Another problem you can face when you put your laundry room in the basement is if you ever need to take out or bring in a

Lauren Kay Sims’s Texas Lakehouse

Texas is famous for its unparalleled barbecue, its gargantuan size, and—arguably our favorite reason—the collection of castle-like homes scattered across its hills, mountains, and plains. One such property, a seven-bedroom lakehouse in Chandler, belongs to lifestyle influencer Lauren Kay Sims, who is known for her fashion and style blogging, and her musings on building what she calls “a radiant life.”

As part of her pursuit of radiance, she enlisted Urbanology Designs’ principal designer and owner, Ginger Curtis, to help ensure their new vacation house would reflect her family’s style, without doing an entire remodel. She asked Curtis to outfit several of the key spaces in her new “kingdom”: namely the sprawling living room, primary bedroom, and a hybrid home office and lounge.

“Lauren and her husband purchased a grand, traditional style vacation home and wanted to put their stamp on it,” Curtis explains. Luckily for the Dallas-based designer, Sims knew

Coastal and traditional styles combine in this Montecito home |

Even before its recent redesign, this four-bedroom farmhouse-style home had a lot to offer. It’s in the acceptable setting of Hedgerow, a highly sought after, peaceful neighborhood in Montecito between the ocean and the upper village, and it was built on a secluded plot with a stunning garden, and views of the Montecito mountains beyond.

It’s a truly idyllic place to vacation. But there were some interior design challenges to overcome before it became the perfect retreat, as designer Hayley English (opens in new tab) found out.

The homeowners, who have a young family, enlisted the interior designer’s help to create a better backdrop for vacations and casual gatherings with friends, and to improve the sense of flow throughout the space. They were looking for an unpretentious, youthful take on traditional farmhouse style with coastal decor elements, says designer Hayley English, who picks out her highlights and describes how she

Floor-to-ceiling kitchen storage ideas: 10 stylish looks |

Floor-to-ceiling kitchen storage has become more popular over the last five years, have we all grown taller? No, but you will need steps or a ladder to reach that uppermost shelf! So why, the change in cabinet design?

As modern kitchens began to flourish in the 20th century, the concept of cupboard storage, multi-purpose shelves and units became more popular. Eventually, contemporary kitchen storage evolved to boast fitted cabinets and designer appliances as our kitchens became the central space for living inside the home.

Floor-to-ceiling kitchen storage

This evolution continues, as we seek to create as much storage in our kitchens as possible, and the tradition of gaps between a wall cabinet and the ceiling begins to fade.

But should all kitchen cabinets stretch to the ceiling? Does this style work in smaller kitchens, or should only large spaces consider it? Do floor-to-ceiling kitchen cabinets impact the rest of the
